Why We're Hosting Shift Work Summit 2026: The Middle Office, Physical AI, and the Leaders Pulling Ahead
Fast-growing staffing platforms are compounding at 140% a year while the industry grows 7%. Here is why Shift Work Summit 2026 is about the middle office, physical AI, and the leaders doing the work.
Shift Work Summit 2026 takes place on Thursday, October 29. This year's program focuses on two trends we see in our data and hear from our customers. First, the middle office is becoming the place where staffing companies win and keep business. Second, physical AI and data center construction are driving new demand for light industrial staffing.
Here is why we chose these themes and who will be speaking.
Fast-growing staffing companies are outpacing the market
Our Staffing Reliability Report analyzed shifts running on HyperTrack in Q2 and Q3 of 2026. Light industrial staffing platforms running on HyperTrack are growing at a median 140% per year, while the staffing industry they compete in is forecast to grow 7%. From the report:
"Tech-driven staffing platforms are growing at the expense of traditional staffing firms."
The best performing platforms deliver a 97.4% show rate and 84.2% on-time arrival, compared to 70.8% and 56.9% for the lowest performers. Show rates matter because, as the report notes:
"Clients are not billed when the contract is closed. They are billed when the worker shows up."
Staffing companies that measure reliability, act on no-show risk before the shift starts, and pay workers quickly and accurately are winning more repeat business from their clients.
The middle office is the next wave of AI in staffing
Bullhorn sees the same trend across its customer base. Roughly 10% of US staffing industry revenue runs through Bullhorn One. In our October 8 webinar, Sonal Patel, Sr. Product Marketing Manager for middle office at Bullhorn, shared data from Bullhorn's annual customer survey: 54% of staffing firms have automated candidate search, but only 29% have automated payroll and billing.
"The front office got that first wave of AI. The middle office is the next wave, and that's where a lot of the opportunity sits." (Sonal Patel, Bullhorn)
The middle office covers time and attendance, approvals, payroll, billing, and compliance. Errors and disputes in these steps delay pay for workers and invoices for clients. As Sonal said, "It's in the middle office where we see the next competitive advantage."
Physical AI and data centers are driving light industrial staffing
New demand for light industrial staffing is coming from data center construction and physical AI. The shifts in our report include warehousing, logistics, retail, manufacturing, hospitality, events, facilities, data center construction, and physical AI jobs. In September 2026, SIA revised its forecast for industrial staffing growth from 1% to 7%.
These clients tend to be tech-forward and expect the same visibility and accuracy from their staffing partners. From the report:
"Mainstream staffing must upgrade their middle office automation to protect revenue, especially with new clients in data center construction and physical AI being tech-forward."
"Tech-forward staffing buyers expect the latest technologies from their vendors, reward reliability with repeat business, and avoid dealing with manual or antiquated systems."
Staffing companies that want to win this business need to show who worked, when, and for how long, and get pay and bill right the first time.
Highlighting the leaders doing the work

This year we invited operators who are already running the middle office playbook to share how they do it, from the CEOs and founders building staffing platforms and agencies who win clients with reliability, trust and safety, and accurate, fast pay and bill cycles.
